Why Doesn't Beer Come in Plastic Bottles?

Standard plastic bottles, typically PET, aren't used for beer because they allow oxygen in and CO2 out, potentially reacting with alcohol, and often can't handle the heat needed for pasteurization.

While plastic offers benefits like lower weight and shatter resistance, it poses significant problems for beer quality and stability. Here’s a closer look:


  1. Chemical Interaction Risks: The most common plastic for beverage bottles is Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). While generally safe for water and soda, concerns arise with alcohol. Plasticizers, like phthalates, are sometimes added during manufacturing. These substances are less soluble in water but can dissolve in ethanol (alcohol). Over time, especially with longer storage, these compounds could potentially leach from the plastic into the beer. This not only affects the beer's taste profile but also raises health concerns. Even the base PET material can have interactions, potentially imparting off-flavors. It's important to note that beer isn't only sold in glass; aluminum cans are hugely popular and share many of glass's advantages over plastic. Let's break down why these two materials dominate:


  1. Superior Barrier Properties: Glass is virtually impermeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide. This means it perfectly protects the beer from oxidation and prevents carbonation loss, preserving the intended flavor and fizz for a long shelf life. Aluminum cans offer a similar, near-perfect barrier, also blocking 100% of light which can cause "skunky" flavors in beer (glass needs to be colored, like brown or green, for significant light protection).

  2. Chemical Inertness: Glass is essentially inert. It doesn't react with the beer, leach chemicals, or impart any flavors. What the brewer puts in the bottle is what the consumer tastes. This purity is a major selling point. Aluminum cans use internal coatings to prevent direct contact between the metal and the beer, achieving a similar inertness in practice.

  3. Heat Resistance: Both glass bottles and aluminum cans easily withstand the high temperatures required for pasteurization processes like tunnel pasteurization. This is crucial for ensuring the microbiological safety and shelf stability of the beer without compromising the packaging integrity.   4. Consumer Perception & Tradition: Glass, in particular, has a long history with beer and is often perceived as a premium packaging material.
